Athlete's foot (tinea pedis) is a fungal skin infection that usually begins between the toes. It commonly occurs in people whose feet have become very sweaty while confined within tight-fitting shoes. It is commonly seen on the soles of the feet and in between the toes. In advanced cases, an infection caused by bacteria can also result. The fungus can spread to other areas of the body, including toenails.
